Behind the Scenes: Bertelsmann HR Services Internship Blog

Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services

Feed:

HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.

Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.

This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!

Interns in Germany participate in company presentations to learn more about the different business units.

I guess this is it!

Hi again everybody

Unfortunately this is the last time I blog. My graduation was last Thursday and today I just came in to wrap things up. This morning when I walked in to the office I realized how much I had missed it, and its only 4 days since I was here last time. My experience here at Bertelsmann HR Services and in New York has probably been the best in my life and I still think that I haven’t fully realized how much I learned. I am really going to miss everybody at the office, the cubes, the coffee, the lunches, all the friends I met and all the good times. I am a person that always sees everything in a positive way. Therefore I am not saying goodbye, just until next time. I am not sad that I am not going to be here every day anymore, I am happy that I got the opportunity. I am not sad to leave all the people that I met behind, I am just happy that I got to get to know them. To Mio, Freddie, Chris and my fellow interns; Thank you guys for making my internship such a wonderful experience!

Until next time, take care of yourselves.

Sincerely,

Nina

Miguel's last week as an intern

Well, I guess this is my last blog as an HR Services intern here at Bertelsmann. It has been a great experience although to short. I’m leaving back to Mexico this Saturday and I’m both exited and sad of doing so. Last week was probably the best one I’ve had in New York City. First of all I finally finished my last project (at least ¾ of it), second we had the Bertelsmann meeting at a really cool restaurant. Here we met with all of the Bertelsmann team we didn’t know and we even get to meet the CEO of Random House. Then on Friday we went out with the guys (Mio, Freddie and Chris) to an excellent place at the Village, I just wish I knew about this place before. We had a lot of fun hearing first a DJ and then the live band that was excellent. We got to relax and just hang out as friends.
This week we have our final presentation on Thursday and I can honestly say that if I were in any other kind of situation I would be probably more stressed about it than I actually am. Everybody here has given me the confidence to speak to them without worries, I feel more secure and better at what I want to communicate.
I just can say thank you to all the team. Seriously I hope you understand what working here has meant to me. You are great!

A little bit of this and a little bit of that

Hi everybody,

Sorry for not keeping you up to date for a while but here comes a new update about the adventures at Bertelsmann HR Services. Thanksgiving has passed and I had a great time, one of my friends from New Paltz invited me to his house for a traditional American Thanksgiving, which was great. The food was delicious and I have decided to start Thanksgiving in Sweden. My plan is to print out different recipes, divide them up amongst my friends and have a thanksgiving dinner.

Work has also been great and Victoria presented her final project this week. She is now on her way back to Germany and she will be truly missed in the office. Next Thursday is my last day so right now all my time is devoted to my final project which is about finding a winning model for a keyword marketing campaign. It is quite tricky but I am slowly moving forward.

Yesterday we went to Agua Dulce for Holiday Cocktails. It was a lot of fun with good food, nice drinks and great company.

I guess that’s it for this time. Enjoy your weekend everybody, I know I will:)

It’s a very sad Week . . .

04. December 2009 @ 23:32 · Assigned to -
This week has been filled with mixed emotions. There has been good news and bad. I’ll start with the bad so we can end on a happy note.
Bad news
#1 . The internship is coming to an end. I never realized it but I didn’t spent much time at Bertelsmann AG. After tallying the days and hours spent in the office out of the six interns I’ve been here the least. I started in October and will leave in December and for 3 days a week and a few hours a day it really hasn’t been a lot of time. But I hope my presence has been just as significant as the other interns.
# 2. Bertelsmann HR services lost their gorgeous German intern: Viktoria Gass. Who has finished her studies in New York and has to return to Germany to take her final exams. I’ll miss learning German at work from her but look forward to crossing paths and seeing her in the future. We’ll keep in contact through facebook!
The good news
In celebration of the holidays the interns were cordially invited to attend an amazing Bertelsmann Party, last night. It really helped create holiday spirit! As a surprise the interns even got a special mention from our COO Rob in his holiday/ year end speech. It was an amazing way to spend our last day with Viktoria and it made saying our good byes a lot easier.

Hope everyone feels the holiday spirit as well! More next week!

Best,
Wendy Eng

Thanksgiving week at Bertelsmann

Thanks giving week!

Hi everybody, I have only three more weeks left in New York City and working as an intern at Bertelsmann HR Services. The last couple of weeks have been the best yet; the whole team has been working in individual and team projects. Each one of the interns has by now decided what their own final project will be and we are all working a lot in them.
Today, the whole team shot a holiday special video. It was so much fun doing it and watching all the bloopers with everybody. We really messed up at the beginning but it’s all fixed now. Also Jeff Pollard (me and Nina’s IIB coordinator) took us and the guys to a great Japanese restaurant just around the corner, they had really weird dishes but it ended up being a great experience.
Having this little time left in the City is driving me nuts, there is still so much to see and do and it really never ends and never gets old. Just walking around makes you learn so much about not only the American culture, but also how easily people from all over the world can live together in such a cool atmosphere. I’m just grateful to have this experience and working with these guys, they’ve really given me some awesome tips on what to do after work and get to see as much as I can in this short time. It really seems a long run at first, but now the time is flying and you have to remember to squeeze as much as you can from it.

Never-ending Adventure

20. November 2009 @ 17:23 · Assigned to -
Hi everybody,

Since it is already Friday again I thought that it would be a good idea to update you on what has been going on this week. Time has been flying by and it feels like it only goes faster and faster. This week I have finished my project about social networks in different countries. The project has been a lot of fun and I believe that the presentation turned out really good. I have also decided what to do for my final project, but I have to do some more research before I tell you more about it. I have also been helping Freddie out with the Bertelsmann University, and since I am a management major it has been really cool to get some pointers on what to think about when hosting an event like this. We have also decided to make a video about how it is to intern at Bertelsmann so this week we have been having brainstorm meetings and our plan is to start filming on Monday. The idea is really cool so I hope that it turns out good.

Yesterday I went to Dave & Busters for the first time in my life and it was so much fun. I also saw the midnight premiere of New Moon, the second Twilight movie, and it was awesome. The funny thing is that the cinema was packed with young girls with Twilight t-shirts and every time one of the good looking guys was shown on the screen everybody was clapping and “ohh-ing”. Very different from going to the cinema in Sweden, and a cool experience. On Thursday the whole IIB group went ice skating in Bryant Park. It was really cool to play around on ice skates in the middle of Manhattan, and every time I looked up it felt surreal. So my life in New York continues, I am learning and experiencing a lot and the adventure is never-ending :)

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

/Nina

Big lights keep inspiring me

Hi everybody,

It is Friday again and my fourth week has passed. It is strange how fast time flies by when you are having fun. It feels like it was yesterday I first walked in to the office and at the same time I feel so comfortable by now that it feels like I have been here for ever. The past week I have mostly been working on my social media project but I have also helped Freddie out with some things and tried to figure out what my final project is going to be. Unfortunately I have not made a decision yet, but at least some ideas have formed in my head. It is crazy how much I have learnt about different technical tools, and all this without even thinking about it. I have to admit that I almost feel tech-savvy nowadays, which is a huge thing since before I came here computers used to stop working as soon as I came close.:) The trying different restaurants mission continues and we are eating in a new place every day, I love trying new food so I am really enjoying myself.

New York has as always been wonderful. The weather has been going crazy and we have had everything from summer warm to freezing cold. I keep on exploring and every day is a new adventure.

Have a nice weekend and I’ll see you all next week!

/ Nina

Learning, living and enjoying!

Hi again,

Another week has past here at Bertelsmann, Inc. HR Services and I have to say that time goes really fast when you are having fun. This week I have finished my website, which is unbelievable since I did not know anything about this kind of things when I arrived here three weeks ago. I am very proud of it and want everybody to see it, so feel free to check it out on: http://ninalemic.jimdo.com/. I have also designed a cool twitter page for my self and right now I am working on an exciting project about different social networks. We have continued our mission to try all the different food and restaurants that this area has to offer. This has probably led to my stomach getting a little bigger, but also to us having a lot of fun and a great lunch experiences every day :)

Last weekend was Halloween, which was great fun. My friend and I decided to go back to New Paltz and celebrate it. This was awesome and we got a traditional Halloween with a parade, trick or treating, pumpkin carving and cool costumes.

Ok this is it for today, I will write again next week.

Enjoy your weekend!

/Nina

Miguel's third week!

06. November 2009 @ 16:22 · Assigned to -
Today I finish my third week at Bertelsmann. Getting to know the whole team has been a great experience. I didn’t think I could learn this much in such a short amount of time. We have been learning how to use a huge amount of programs I didn’t know even existed, and well I have never considered myself a computer expert or anything like that, but I can say now that my knowledge in this field has grown at least 200%.
Other great aspect of this experience, (and probably the best) is getting to know the American way of doing business. They have such a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere but combined always with a strong will to go forward and a great sense of responsibility and performance. The guys (Mio, Freddie and Chris) have made us feel more than welcome to ask anything or to give our ideas. In fact we have a weekly meeting in which we discuss everything that we’ve been up to.
I can say now for sure that in these weeks the internship has dwarfed my expectative.
