Describe your educational background. Where did/do you study, what degrees did/will you receive?
From 2011 till 2014 I conducted my Bachelor studies in Business Administration with the majors Management and Finance at the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg and at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in Riga, where I spent my 5th semester abroad.
Afterwards I changed for the Master program to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster where I focused on Strategic Management und Business Development. Within my Master I took two semesters on leave to gain more practical experiences, so I will finish my studies in spring 2018.

Describe your career history. What have been your professional experiences?
During my Bachelor studies I completed an internship at the sales department of a family-run business specialized in high-class winter gardens and glass constructions as well as in a medium-sized wealth management company.
As I became more and more interested in strategic management topics I joined the student consultancy move e.V. in Münster to learn more about this field of activities, acquire first essential skills and get in touch with our partner consultancy companies. Thus I completed an internship at the controlling specialist Horváth & Partners Management consultants in Munich, where I was part of the competence center Strategy, Innovation & Sales, and at the Corporate Controlling & Strategy department at Bertelsmann, where I was part of the in-house consulting team.

What attracted you to Bertelsmann and your internships? What is/was your favorite aspect about your job?
After my internship at an external consultancy I wanted to learn more about strategic management and controlling tasks in a leading international business firm like Bertelsmann. Moreover I was fascinated by the fact that all of Bertelsmann’s three business branches Media, Services and Education are challenged by digitalization and thus the company experiences a strategic transformation through the years. Also the image, core values and the corporate culture of Bertelsmann attracted me to become acquainted with this firm.
The favorite aspect about my job at Bertelsmann was that the strategic project I worked on started at the very beginning of my internship and lasted over four months until the end of my internship. So I collaborated in all different project phases and could therefore broaden my skills not only in terms of our project content but also in regard to project work in general. Moreover I had the opportunity to participate in other strategic projects and take over controlling tasks for different divisions, which provided me a good overview and understanding of the company as a whole and the divisions and branches in particular. This variety of tasks and insights in combination with the extraordinary working environment at Bertelsmann made my internship a great experience.

What has been your most challenging/rewarding/exciting task or project thus far?

During our strategy project we had several meetings with our client where current progresses and results were presented. These were always exciting situations when the work of the last weeks was shared and discussed. I really appreciated the open feedback culture in these meetings that provided us not only with praises but also with constructive support and new aspects to follow up.
A special moment for me was when in one of these meetings the comprehensive competitor analysis I was responsible for and conducted independently was presented. It was very rewarding to realize what concrete value my work created for our client and therefore a great motivation for the following tasks.

What qualities do you feel are necessary to be a successful employee at Bertelsmann?
All employees at Bertelsmann I got in touch with were very friendly, open-minded, respectful and collegial. This working atmosphere really enables you to be yourself and makes you feel welcomed from the first day on.
Besides of course doing your job in a responsible and prudent way, you should further be curious about new topics and experiences, not afraid to ask questions at any time as well as courageous to be an active part and inject own ideas in discussions. At Bertelsmann it is also essential to be a team player and moreover be willing to network.

What was/is a typical day during your internship like?
A typical day started with checking my mails and preparing for the first meeting in the morning, usually with my mentor. Here we discussed our project approach, current tasks, results or any questions. A fix part of my everyday routine was the daily lunch meeting with colleagues. These “lunch dates”, which are highly valued at Bertelsmann, are a great opportunity to connect with other interns as well as with colleagues also from other departments and divisions and learn more about them personally.
Despite of that there was no typical daily routine with regard to my tasks at the internship. They ranged from analyses for our strategic project, research work for colleagues, preparation of meetings and presentations as well as discussions and feedback sessions, etc. I also took part in our weekly team and monthly department meetings, where employees were informed about upcoming events or could exchange about current topics or other matters.

What are your professional goals? Any others?
After graduation I would like to start my professional career in respect of my previous practical experiences in a strategy-related environment. e.g. as a management consultant or in a corporate strategy department of a firm.
Therefore it is most important for me to work in an inspiring, motivated and collegial team for an international operating, responsible company that makes me broaden my skills and knowledge, supports me to grow with new challenges and provides me appropriate development opportunities.
