Describe your educational background. Where did/do you study, what degrees did/will you receive?
I graduated from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in summer 2013 where I focused my studies on entrepreneurship and economics. In 2012, I spent one semester at the University of Oregon in the US. Right now, I am doing a gap year between Bachelor and Master to gain additional work experience. This fall, I want to go back to university to do a Master’s degree.

Describe your career history. What have been your professional experiences?
Throughout the past 4 years I was able to gain various insights through my internships – from large corporations to 3-month-old startups and consulting. All of them were highly valuable to me and shaped my skills and personality. For example, my internship with Dafiti, Rocket Internet’s newly founded ecommerce company in Brazil, was amazing. There was an incredible entrepreneurial spirit to the whole work atmosphere and I got infected by the startup virus. I also enjoyed consulting a lot – diving deeply into new projects and companies with a great team gave me great insights I do not want to miss. The most challenging experience and certainly one of the most interesting, was a consulting project I worked on in Ghana in Fall 2013.

What attracted you to Bertelsmann and your internships? What is/was your favorite aspect about your job?
I got to know Bertelsmann during “Talent Meets Bertelsmann 2013” and got the impression that Bertelsmann was a very innovative and diverse company offering highly different career opportunities in all fields of the media industry. I liked that. Also, I have for a long time been interested in digital media and new technologies. So when I read the job offer for BDMI, Bertelsmann’s venture capital division, this was the perfect fit for me.

What has been your most challenging/rewarding/exciting task or project thus far?
I love about the work here that it is a great mixture of financial topics and the startup world. I get to know several innovative tech startups per day and get a great feeling on new trends in the digital world and how they could be useful related to Bertelsmann as a company. Also, not being in a single division, I get a good overviews of the whole Bertelsmann group. Sometimes, it gets challenging to wrap my head around the technical aspects of our startups and their business models. But learning about new technologies and ideas every day is what makes the work interesting.

What qualities do you feel are necessary to be a successful employee at Bertelsmann?
In my opinion, entrepreneurial spirit and being open minded is an important character trait. There are so many divisions with different views on the media world. You have to try to walk in these people’s shoes in order to understand Bertelsmann as a company.

What was/is a typical day during your internship like?
I am fortunate enough to not be able to describe a typical day. However, some elements were always included in a work week: For us it is important, to keep on track about new startups that are founded and about the trends in the market. This includes going to events and browsing the web for new ideas, evaluating business models and discussing them with the team. Most days would include meetings and calls where startups pitch their ideas and discuss them with us. When approaching a potential deal, I would be involved into the Due Diligence process to analyze a startup and its financials in all his details.

What are your professional goals? Any others?
Whatever job I do – the most important aspects for me are to have challenging projects and an inspiring team & work environment in which I am able to grow and learn every day. I would love to be on the edge of innovation and would love to start my own business one day.

If you have one word to describe Bertelsmann – what would it be?
