Internship with Bertelsmann India Investments in New Delhi

Dear Student Challengers and Blog Readers,

Since I have a keen interest in digital ventures and emerging markets, I chose to follow up my internship at Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments (BDMI) with a placement at Bertelsmann India Investment (BII) in New Delhi. In this post, I would like to share with you my amazing experiences in India. But first, I will tell you a little bit about myself.

I graduated with a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Münster. Having gained enormous value from my undergraduate internships, I decided to take a gap year to expand my practical experience. After working for a startup, I joined BDMI, where I first encountered BII. After a recommendation from BDMI and a phone interview, BII invited me to come to New Delhi as an intern on the investment team. This shows how open and connected Bertelsmann is and how easily new professional opportunities can arise within this company.

From the Bertelsmann corporate center in New Delhi, BII invests in ventures in the digital, media and education sectors in India. It also strategically supports other Bertelsmann divisions in India and assists new ones entering the Indian market.

My internship at BII proved to be extremely valuable in several respects. The most important was surely the great team that made up BII. It was a small team with exceptionally friendly people from India and Germany. From my first day, they made sure that I felt welcome. We regularly went out to dinner or the movies together. I also learned a lot from my team during the work day. This brings me to another valuable aspect of the internship: my responsibilities.

Because I had previous experience in the digital sector, I worked on BII’s digital investments. I was fortunate to work on the whole life of an investment opportunity, from the first pitch to BII until BII made the investment. I contributed to the investment decision by creating financial models of the target market and the target company, as well as evaluating the competitive landscape and conducting other due-diligence tasks. I also had the opportunity to attend workshops in which my experienced colleagues agreed on a future strategy with the target company. These valuable experiences enabled me to understand how an investment is conducted from start to end. When not working on the main investment, I evaluated incoming deal flow or conducted market research to advance BII’s investment thesis.

Finally, the opportunity to live and to travel in India made my internship at BII unforgettable. Together with another Bertelsmann intern, I lived in a great apartment which Bertelsmann provided. On the weekends, we traveled to famous Indian cities, including Mumbai, Agra, and Jaipur, and even neighboring countries like Nepal. But there were also a lot of things to discover in New Delhi, from astonishing temples to lovely restaurants.

All in all, I can wholeheartedly recommend an internship at BII. I am convinced that everyone will benefit a great deal from working in this amazing team and from living in a country as exciting as India. I invite anyone to contact me on LinkedIn with questions about my experiences there.
